The W3C has started down the path of creating a "Binary XML" format.
The hard-core XML people like Tim Bray and Elliotte Rusty Harold (1, 2) are totally against it.
I can see a need for having a flexible and interoperable binary file format, but do not see the logic in calling it "XML" (other than the obvious marketing ploy).
