Discussion of obsolete file formats

Slashdot has a discussion started by someone asking for Examples of Obsolete File Formats. Interesting, but nothing really new.

This sort of thing happens pretty frequently. Here is an example from The Unofficial Apple Weblog.

My own saga is more hardware-related: someone recently asked me about a MS-DOS game I wrote in college (~1987). I thought I still had the 5.25 inch disks, but now I can't find them (though I did find a drive to read them).

The list of obsolete hardware is pretty huge: check out the Lost Format Preservation Society. It has a weird side-scrolling interface with the silhouettes and brief details of various storage hardware.
